FAQ

Exercise: Good for immunity or not?

Your immune system is strengthened by exercise. Exercise boosts the production of white blood cells, which can fight off infections. Your body also eliminates toxins. Exercise can prevent diseases such as cancer and heart disease. It can also lower stress levels.

But, too much exercise can lead to a weakening of your immune system. If you work out too hard, your muscles become sore. This can cause inflammation as well as swelling. Your body then has to produce more antibodies to fight off infection. These extra antibodies can lead to allergies or autoimmune disorders.

So, don't overdo it!

What can you do for your immune system to improve?

Human bodies are made up of trillions upon trillions of cells. Each cell works together to create organs and tissues that fulfill specific functions. One cell is replaced by another when it dies. Hormones, which are chemical signals that allow cells to communicate with one another, enable them to do so. All bodily processes are controlled by hormones, including metabolism and immunity.

Hormones are chemical substances that glands secrete throughout the body. They travel through bloodstreams and act as messengers that control the function of our bodies. Some hormones are produced internally while others are made outside of the body.

The hormone-producing glands release their contents into bloodstream. This is when hormone production starts. Once hormones are released they move through the bloodstream until they reach their intended organ. Sometimes hormones stay active for only a short time. Other hormones stay active longer and continue to influence the body's functioning even after they leave the bloodstream.

Some hormones are made in large quantities. Others are made in small quantities.

Certain hormones can only be produced at specific times in life. The production of estrogen can occur during puberty and pregnancy, as well as menopause and old age. Estrogen is important for women to develop breasts and maintain bone density. It also helps prevent osteoporosis. It helps to stimulate hair growth and maintains skin's softness.

What is the difference in fat and sugar?

Fat can be a source of energy that is obtained from food. Sugar is naturally found in fruits and veggies. Both sugars and fats have the same calories. However, fats contain more than twice as many calories as sugars.

Fats are stored within the body and can contribute to obesity. They may cause cholesterol buildup and lead to strokes or heart attacks.

Sugars are quickly absorbed into the body and provide instant fuel. This causes blood glucose levels rise. High blood glucose levels are dangerous as it can increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin, B3/niacin, B6/pyridoxine, folic Acid, biotin and pantothenic Acid as examples. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E is required for good vision and reproduction.
  • K – Required for healthy nerves & muscles.
  • P - Vital for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion, absorption and absorption iron
  • R - Required for red blood cell production

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has established the RDA values.

For adults aged 19 and older, the RDA for vitamin B is 400 micrograms daily. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

2000 micrograms daily is required for adults over 50 to maintain their general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms each day when breastmilk production occurs.
